Tasting #32 Recap: For Peat’s Sake

Tasting #32 Recap: For Peat’s Sake

Tasting #32 Recap: For Peat’s Sake

On Wednesday, April 10th, and Thursday, April 25th, the Saratoga Whiskey Club had its first tasting that just focused on peat. We have had plenty of peated whiskies before, but they were usually from one area (Islay), so this tasting was different in that we had Speyside, Highlands, Japan and of course Islay. We also paired each whisky with different smoked snacks. There were 28 members in attendance.

Here is a list of the whiskies we tasted:

  • Glenfiddich’s Fire & Cane – paired with Applewood smoked salame
  • Ancnoc Cutter – paired with smoked Gouda and aged Cheddar
  • Kaiyo The Peated – paired with Teriyaki beef jerky
  • Port Charlotte 10 Year – paired with smoked mussels
  • SMWS 10.118 ‘Enthralling pink and peat intensity’ – Bunnahabhain 10 Year – paired with smoked trout and smoked salmon

Two fun evenings of education and great whisky. Cheers!

Tasting #26 Recap: Luxury Tasting

On Wednesday, December 5, the Saratoga Whiskey Club had its first higher-priced tasting that we named the Luxury Tasting. These were all bottles that we either purchased through auctions or were collected over the last year by the club. There were 16 members in attendance. This was the max number since we only had one bottle of each of the five bottles we tasted.

Here is a list of the whiskies we tasted:

  • Craigellachie 23 Year
  • Distiller’s Art Bunnahabhain 27 Year
  • Bruichladdich Private Single Cask 9 Year Sherry
  • Edradour Single Cask 14 Year
  • Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique

It was a great first shot at a Luxury tasting and we can’t wait to do this again in 2019!

Cheers!

Tasting #11 Recap: Islay Exclusives From Our Trip

The Saratoga Whisk(e)y Club had Tasting #11 on two nights, October 11 and October 25, 2017. The focus of the evening was bottles that we hauled back from Islay on the first Saratoga Whiskey Club trip to Scotland. These were very special bottles as most were distillery exclusives and not easy to find.  We had a great turnout of 30 people, both members and non-members. We had eight different whiskies at our tasting, one from each of the eight distilleries on Islay.  Here is a list of what we tasted:

  • We started with a Charlie Wells Dry Hopped Lager from England
  • Lagavulin Jazz Festival Bottling 2017
  • Ardbeg An Oa
  • Caol Ila Distillery Exclusive 2017
  • Laphroaig Brodir
  • Bunnahabhain Feis Ile 2017 Moine Port Pipe
  • Kilchoman Distillery Exclusive 2017 – Rum Finish
  • Bowmore Warehousemen’s Distillery Exclusive
  • Port Charlotte Valinches Cask Explorations 16 & 17

Overall it was a fantastic tasting with lots of special whiskies!  It is always great bringing back bottles that are not available locally.
